Can anyone tell me if the lower units are interchangeable between a 1983 Johnson 7.5 and a 1993 evinrude 8hp?

I would like to take the 25" long shaft from the 83 motor and swap it out with the 93 to make the 93 a long shaft for my sailboat.

They look exactly the same except for length, I have then sitting side by side.

If the bolt patterns are the same, the shaft splines are the same, and the water pump grommet lines up, it'll work. Internal parts won't interchange, though, as they made changes to the gears and clutch...
- Scott

The top of the gearshift rod is different. It is fatter and it is flat on both sides..

Hi Bill,
I've got an early 1980s, long-shaft shift rod out of a 20" transom motor. I already traded off the driveshaft so this isn't helping me having just the shift rod. Are the internal lower unit ends the same where they enter the shift cam? You'll have to disassemble the units to determine that, as I don't think you can pull the shift rod out and slide another one in without losing the shift cam's placement.
If you're interested in the shift rod, drop me a line off-board...
