Bill....the "T" would indicate a '3' in the year. Look on top of the block for a large freeze plug. The model number should be on there.

Almost, Bill, but not quite. It would be considered a short shaft. Do you have it mounted on a boat now or what type of boat are you going to use it on?

I want to use it on my sailboat. I have a 1983 long shaft Johnson on there now but it is unreliable. I wondered if I could swap out the shafts, what do you think????

Re: Help with year of Motor

I'd give it try. You would of course have to make sure the water tube matches up, along with the shift shaft and splines on the driveshaft. Others' may know for sure if this is possible. Gear ratio may also be different, too. But that may not be such a big deal on a Sailboat, as you could re-prop it to compensate for that. All you can do is give it a try. On that small of a motor, it should be no big deal to drop the lower unit's and check them out...

EDIT: Or you could trade it for a long or Extra long shaft...
