Hi:

I have recently bought a boat with a '96 40 HP Johnson 2 stroke on it. When in idle in forward gear, it stalls, but only when warm. This is a very new engine, with only about 27 hours on it, tho it sat in the seller's garage for about a year before I got it.

I set the idle adjustment up, but it's nearly bottomed out and seems it's idling OK, if not a bit fast (I haven't put a tach on it yet) when warming up or out of gear, but coming back into harbor it stalls in forward or reverse idle.

The SELOC manual says nothing about out-of-gear idle, just forward gear idle. If I set that to be spec (800 rpm), it's looking like the out-of-gear idle would be too high...? Would the idle mixture adjustment affect one state (warm vs. cold) and not the other? Is there something simple I should be looking at instead (air or fuel filters? Carburator cleaner?)

Thanks!

Dennis
San Jose
