Im In trouble!!!! see attached Photo's
the dang crank shaft bearing blew Up this is why the fly wheel burnt up!!???? Thanks Bogart

http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l81560.jpg

http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l81561.jpg

http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l81562.jpg

http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l81563.jpg

http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l81565.jpg

http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l81564.jpg

Dhadley I cant afford to crack the block again
I just redid the motor last year! Ive got alot of money$ into this old motor and I cant keep pouring it in! so I put it back together with some new parts alot of packing grease in the new bearings! and a wish and a prayer! I used a friends fly wheel to test it after I put it back together it runs! but for how long?????
There could still be a scored piston from what u said about the inside magnet on the fly wheel burning up! so I guess ill try to run it
this weekend or when I can locate a cheap flywheel
I dont want to spend money on this seadrive any more!!!????? Im sad!

Bogart.

I wouldn't panic just yet. When its time we'll let you know.

It just looks like the top bearing dropped down out of the housing and rubbed on the crank. The part it rubbed on is the counter weight. Not critical that its smooth.

Its hard to tell from your pics about the vertical part of the crank where the bearing needles ride. Is it smooth? We're not so concerned about the discoloration as the smoothness.

You didnt really use packing grease on any of the bearings -- right???

Dhadley: The question about the packing grease was my first thought also. I also noticed in the photo's that the bearing carrier bolt's are missing, and one is broken off. I wonder if those bolt's came loose, and caused the problem. As for the grease, that is going to have to be removed, or there will be a crankshaft problem. I went back and looked at photo #6, is that a broken bolt at the 3 oclock position in the photo. The way that bearing is galled, and heat welded, I would'nt have much hope for the crank. I would think the retaining pin for the bearing would have kept the bearing from falling down, unless it was sheared when the bearing failed

There is no retaing pin in those housings. There are at least 4 castings for those upper housings and one allows the bearing to fit fairly loose. When you press it in or out the bearing will move real easy. With the other castings the bearing has a nice press fit.

We always "stake" the bearing after it's pressed back in. Never had one of those drop.

I'm guessing that the broken bolt happened durring the removal process.

There were 2 bolts broken off by this failure
not by the removal of the parts! the good news is they both backed out easy!did the crank shaft try to jump out of there???????????
The marring on the crank shaft in pic #6 is pretty rough! and I did use some OMC blue goo
stuff grease???? on the bearing thinking it would help!???? should I remove it!????????
I dont know how the bearing failed!!???

Ps I need a Fly wheel so if any body has a cheap one 4 sale let me know! I dont want to buy new
the motor might go boom!!!

Bogart.

It's OK to panic now. If the crank isnt smooth its done. Those bearings need a hard smooth surface to ride on. If there was grease on them to start with, that may very well have contributed to their demise. If the grease prevented a roller from moving, that will create heat. Then it just gets worse and the bearings finally seize.

You could try another housing and bearing but its just a band aid on a bad wound.

Dhadley: I don't know where my mind went when I said there was a retainer on that upper bearing, completely forgot that it's a press fit into that bearing carrier. Must be part of the aging process, When does hair in the ear's start?
