Dropping lower unit

I have an early 80's Evinrude 115 and I can't get the lower unit off. I've removed all the bolts and the unit drops down about 1/2 inch. I've pulled the pin in the shift lever but can't move it forward to where I can push the shift lever in to disengage the shift rod. I believe the gears are chewed and locked in reverse. Any ideas on how to move shift lever forward so as to push it in and disengage? I tried using a long screwdriver as a crow-bar last night and no luck. It's stuck hard in reverse.

It shouldn't amke any differnce if the L/U gears are messed up.

It helps if the shift lever is in the reverse position. You may want to push the L/U back up to get the shift lever (under hood) in reverse.

I'm not sure that your motor is like mine, but mine has two screws on the connector, one on top facing front and the one under the link which runs from side to side. The latter one is the one to remove on my motor.
