tach question

Thanks to Iboats.com I have been on the water the last 8 months after finally getting some motor issues straightened out on my Johnson 88 special (1993). However, the other day while running I noticed the tach go back to 0 - something I hadn't had happen before. The rectifier was changed several months ago when the tach wasn't working at all and that solved the problem. Now, it goes to zero when the key is turned like normal and works at all rpm's for the first few minutes but then starts bouncing and ends up at zero while running. When she's shut down and restarted, the same thing happens again. I checked wire connections - any other suggestions or places to look? Thanks for any help.

Re: tach question

Connect your volt meter between "S" & "G" on the back of the tach. It should read about 3.5 VAC at idle and 5-7 VAC at 2000rpm. If the voltage goes to "0" when the tach does, it's probably the rectifier.

c/6
Hooty
