Was crab fishing the other day, (doing well by the way) and I shut my motor down to drift for a while. When I started my engine up, and put it in forward, I went backwards, then when I put it in reverse I went foward. I shut down the engine, then I tried to restart it, it started but with some effort, when it started it would idle at high revs. I then shut it down again and could not get it started. When trying to start the engine it back fires almost ripping my arms out of my sockets..

Couple things to look for.

Did the flywheel key shear?

Is this thing really carboned up?

thanks for your reply DJ

Yes it did, and I have replaced it, (about an hour ago) now it runs great, expect for there is no water coming out the tell tale, I looked at the impeller and it's fried, I am going to have to buy the kit. Question, when the engine was running backwards would it of flipped the fins of the impeller over causing it to over heat?

Naa_Danno,

Yes, turning an impeller backwards is bad medicine. Can you account for all the pieces?

Glad you found it. Good work!

You may want to decarb this thing too. That may have caused the kickback to begin with.
