Evinrude 112 Thermostat

I have a 1995 Evinrude 112. After starting it up yesterday for the first time this year, the overheat warning sounded. I had the same problem last spring after I started the engine for the first time after winterization. <br /><br />I had the thermostats replaced last year and the problem went away. It seems that they seized up again. I was wondering - how hard is it to replace those thermostats myself? Don't want to pay another $150.

Thats kind of unusual but since it was done last year it shouldnt be too hard. The screws are sort of difficult to get to with the "bubble back" exhaust but it can be done. Whoever did it last yaer should have put some type of lube on the screws so they shouldnt be corroded.<br /><br />Welcome and good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Showing my ignorance, but where are the thermostats? Are they in the housing below the power head? And do I need any special tools to get to the screws?

i had the same problem this year.<br />if they charge you 150 dollars i would let them do it.<br />I had to pay a mechanic 400 dollars to change a 35 dollar tstat set.<br />now i do it myself.<br />but 150 is cheap.<br /><br />question <br />it seems to me that after the motor sits still for a few months the tstats freeze up.<br />after i winterize the motor could i spray some wd40 down in the tstat housing to prevent it from sticking? could this make a difference?

I am fixing to change the stats on my 1977 140 hp. I figured I would take the exhaust cover and manifold off to access the stats easier. What do you think?

try taking the boat to the ramp,before you put new therms in again,sometime your water hose do not have enough water pressure or volume & will cause it to overheat..

The engine still overheats when it is in the water. Pretty sure it is the thermostats. How hard is it to replace those thermostats and where are they locted on this engine?

At the bottom of each head is a hose. The hose goes to the t-stat housing. <br /><br />Its probably as hard, if not harder, to pull the manifold than the t-stat housing bolts. Getting to the bottom bolts could be tough. It can be done but...<br /><br />When was the last time the water pump kit was replaced? Not just the impeller -- the kit.

Had the same problem with my 115 after it sitting for awhile. Make sure the stats you buy have the vent slot cut into the poppet, or you can make your own slot with a dremel tool. I tried this and it solved the problem. If you do a search on this forum you will find how to do this.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I found a well recommended mechanic who is going to replace the thermostats and the water pump for $200 and he is going to do it at my house. I figured that was a good price to get the job done right.

thats a good price just make shure you are there to see what he is doing.<br />because he might tell you he has to lift the powerhead and will charge you a whole lot more.<br /><br />reeldutch

Go for it! That is a great price. I do mine (twins) but it is a bit*h of a job.

Great Price!<br /><br />Your mechanic does house calls? Wonder if he will drive to Northeast PA... HAHAHA :p
