I just bought a Fleetwin 7.5hp (ser. # 7518-08622) and it is extremely hard to get it to turn over. I took the plugs out and it is much easier. I finally got the thing started and it runs like a champ, but now my shoulder hurts. My question is...Is there supposed to be this much compression? Or do I have to start working out more?

Re: '55 Fleetwin 7.5hp hard to start

Welcome to Iboats, kshartman!

The '56 and later 7.5hp engines had their starter rope wound around a oblong pulley to increase the torque on the crank as the piston reached top dead center, where the resistance 'pulse' is greatest. I expect they added this feature for a good reason. :)
Also, ensure you have enough rope on the pulley to begin with. Some people keep reusing the same after it breaks once, tying a new knot. Since the shorter rope will have fewer turns on the pulley, you get less mechanical advantage when you start. Plus you're working against the rewind spring more. You should be able to turn the engine about three complete revolutions with the rope you have.

Run a 24:1 fuel mix on that outboard, and never rev it above 1500 rpm in neutral. Those engines have a reputation for throwing rods if you abuse them by reving them or starving them of oil. But a great engine anyway - it has survived 50 years already afterall!

Good luck!
'55 Fleetwin
'56 Fleetwin
Note the "New Eas-A-Matic starting greatly reduces starting effort." on the '56 catalog page.
