No Thermostat, no water?

I have a 1959 35 H.P. Johnson which was peeing no water. I put a new impellor in, even though the old one didn't look bad, and still no water. Took the thermostat housing off to check it and found there was no therostat in it. Would this prevent it from getting water. Does it need the thermostat to build up pressure? I left the housing off to see if any water was coming up and looks like just a fine mist.

Should be misting water out the exhaust, it will do more if it's in the water rather than on muffs.

RANimmo, water should gush from the hole on the back of the mid-section, after the thermostat opens. Before that you'll only see a mist.
Since you have no thermostat in there, you should see it gushing straight away. It doesn not need to build pressure.
When you tested the outboard, how did you do it? Best is to submerge the lower unit until the water is up to the water pump. Almost all muffs don't fit this engine properly. The way I understand it, only some water was making it's way up to where the thermostat should go?
Get a thermostat for that engine ASAP. It needs it. You can get one from Iboats here or you can get one from your local NAPA dealer. Same part number.

Good luck!

I will try it with a barrel and some water and see if it is better. I already have ordered a thermostat. I figure it won't hurt until I get it to just start it long enough to see if the water is going through.

Paul is correct, muffs do not fit those well at all.

You need barrel.

Re: No Thermostat, no water?

There is something I don't understand. I was looking in my Seloc manual for this motor and it shows only the 40 had dual water lines. This is a 35, I checked the serial numbers, but it has dual lines. Also I know I hooked them back up the way they came out but a coworker told me that the lines should be crisscrossed instead of coming straight down. Does anybody know which way the lines should be properly hooked up?

O.K. put new thermostat in and put the motor in a barrel of water that more tham submerges the water pump. Was still not peeing so I took the thermostat housing back off and started it and water is gushing out. So I figured maybe it hadn't run long enough for the thermostat to open. Ran it for about two minutes and still no water. I tried something I remember from another post about hooking a hose up to the supply line an running it. Once again water is going through the engine, at least there is a bunch coming out the thermostat housing with the cover off, but only a fine mist out the pee hole. But there was a lot of water coming out the bottom of the motor an I got to looking an up by the return line there are some triangle shape holes, they look factory, that is where the water was coming out. Just for the heck of it I stuck the water hose to the pee hole an sure enough water came out those triangle holes. Is there suppose to be a gasket or something on those holes? One more quick question, are you suppose to put the thermostat in turning a certain way? I know on some automobiles they are suppose to be facing a certain way. My manual has no info on that.

Hiya,

I'm not sure how familiar you are with outboards, so I'll ask.... are you sure you put the key in when you re-installed the new impeller? (the little pin that keeps the driveshaft from spinning inside the impeller without actually turning it).

Also, are you sure that when you put the impeller in that you had the vanes all bending in the correct direction?

I just did the impeller on my new-to-me 25 hp... it sprays water out just from turning it over with the starter (even before it starts).

HTH, (no offense intended if you're an old hand with water pumps)

Brent

No offense taken. I am not a ol pro but have put a few in. I went with the instructions in the manual an spun the shaft clockwise as I put the pump housing on to make the vanes go the right way. An I put the key in it also. There is plenty of water pressure just none coming out the pee hole.
