I have a 1980 70hp evinrude, while running about 35 40 mph it slows down very quickly and makes a sound like putting it gear and the motor shuts off. I'm able to crank it back up with no problem, and run the same way fro about 10 minutes and it will do the same. I felt the foot and it seemed to be warm. But what could be the problem.

Re: Shutting off

Sounds like fuel filter is plugging up or the coils are breaking down, as for the noise you heard its more than likly the clutch in the lower unit it will do that when it dies in gear. When it does that does the primer bulb stay hard, if not try pumping it and see if the motor takes off if it does look at the fuel pump. Hope this helps.

Re: Shutting off

My fathers 1989 Evinrude 120hp was doing the same thing, it turned out that it was the thermostats. It would run great for 10-15 minutes then it would sputter, after he shut it down and restarted after a minute or two it would run great for a few minutes then start to sputter again. After the mechanic broke just about every bolt trying to get to the thermostats, once they were replaced problem solved. I'm no mechanic but your problem sounds similar so thought i would share my experience. Hope this helps.
