i recently replaced waterpump on my 81 35hp evin. and now it doesn't shift right. the instructions didn't tell me not to remove the driveshaft from the lower unit (which i did)and the book at the library says DO NOT or you MUST take apart the gear behind the prop reassemble with the shaft in place. IS THIS TRUE? IS IT HARD? DID I SCREW UP BIG TIME? PLEASE HELP!!!

I do not know why you would remove the drive shaft from the L/U to replace the water pump?The driveshaft remains with the L/U as you lower it from the power head. Once that is done, the pump housing and impeller slde up the shaft.Perhaps, we are not talking about the same parts?

the waterpump housing was melted so bad that when i slid it the shaft went with it. plus i know nothing about these things. the w.p. instructions said not a thing about it.

is it hard to take the L/U apart to realign the gears and such? any help would put a kids line in the water!
