I was trying for hours last night to remove the prop shaft from my 81 johnson 115hp. In the manual it says to grab hold of the prop shaft and the shift rod and pull them both at the same time to disengage. Is there an easier way to get my prop shaft out or is there something I am missing. I already removed everything up to the reverse gear.

I believe you're reading the instructions for removing the prop shaft of a 1977 115hp Johnson which incorporates a oil pump and the prop shaft can be removed as you state.

However, on a 1981 model, the prop shaft is removed with the forward gear and bearing housing intact. In order for that to take place, it is necessary to remove the pinion nut so that the driveshaft can be removed first. As it stands, the forward gear is slaming into the pinion gear and can go no further.

Thanks joe I will give that a shot. I guess I didn't think that was an option because it is pretty tight in there with the prop shaft.
