boat has set up since 96. i've replaced all wires and spark plugs. ideled and ran fine with muffs in my driveway. got it out on the lake and went about 2 or 3 miles and it died. would start and idle fast idle worked and could manually rev engine via carb linkage. when i put it in gear it dies. any suggestions

You need to remove and clean the carbs after it has been sitting that long. The jets and passages inside get clogged with varnish from the old fuel sitting in them and gasket deteriorate. Best way to do it is buy rebuild kits and get some carb cleaner. The kits will come with all the gaskets and parts you need to make them like new. This is a common problem with engines that have seen little use over time. You can either get these from your dealer or online.
