My friend and I were out this weekend on his boat on which he has a late 70's (I believe) 70Hp Evinrude. His starter was spinning but the drive gear was not popping up to engage the flywheel. I got him started with a piece of rope with a knot in it. Later, I twisted the drive gear while holding the starter shaft and it moved up the gear. When we tried the starter again it worked.
Is there some lubricant we cold put on the gear or is there some other problem that needs to be resolved.
