I was checking my engine according to a manual and it said to check the charge coil with an ohmmeter,The book said it should read between 500-650ohms and if not, replace it..Mine read 500 ohms so I ordered a new one for 15 bucks.
What does the charge coil actually do and what symptoms will it show it weak??

Re: Charge Coil

Bill, I suspect that your original charge coil was OK as it was within 'specs'. The charge coil produces the voltage necesary for the CDI powerpack to provide the primary voltage to your coils. If this coil is defective (partially shorted windings, open coil, high resistance etc), weak voltage (or none at all) will be applied to the CDI module. This inturn will produce lower voltage to the primary side of the coils and a weak spark at the plugs.

I hope I didn't confuse you....

Re: Charge Coil

Hey Bill....

The charge coil builds the initial charge for the spark plug. The charge from the coil goes to the power pack and storde in a capacitor. When the timing coil tells the capacitor to fire, the capacitor fires to the ignition coil where the charge is further built up to fire the spark plug. Weak coil equals weak or no spark.

Re: Charge Coil

Most likey Bill, the charge coil has gone south. Replace it. The gooey stuff is goo that surrounds the coil to keep it from collecting moisture and arching to ground. It'll melt and run if the engine is really over heated or the coil is shorted causing to much current which overheats the coil.

Re: Charge Coil

A new coil is coming tomorrow, I cannot figure how to get the stator plate off to get at the wires, is there a secret cause my manual gives me no info at all

Re: Charge Coil

Bill....look for four Phillips head screws near the center of the plate. Wait a minute...I fergot what yer engine is. BRB.

EDIT: OK...3hp...one screw will go through the charge coil and the others will be short ones. Back these out and the plate should lift up and off.
