Did a search on VRO pumps, and learned a lot, but still have some questions.

What year did OMC change the VRO pumps from 3 to 4 wire?

If you currently have a 3 wire, how does the 4 wire plug fit into what ever it plugs into? Is there some sort of conversion kit or does the 4th wire not run through the plug? Hope that made sense!

Can the 4 wire pump be rebuilt if it should fail or do you have to buy a whole new pump again?

As always, thanks for the input.

Cheers,

Brew

Re: VRO - 3 vs 4 Wire Questions

The change from 3 to four wire pump was about 1992,

If you give us the model number, we can give you the correct kit number to convert your engine over to the 4 wire setup.

All the new pumps are completely repairable.

Thanks Seahorse.

Not sure of model number as I'm at work, but it is an 1986 Evinrude 140.

Any advice on the proper 4 wire kit would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Brew

Re: VRO - 3 vs 4 Wire Questions

The original pump number was 174304 that is superceded up to #5004559 for about $269. It should contain all the parts needed to update your system.

If you have the original tank, pull out the pickup and check the filter. IF it is the old style cone shaped one or if it has a "wad" of foam around it, remove them all and install a late modely "tea-bag" filter that all newer motors now use. If you have the smooth vinyl oil line that is brittle and hard, replace it with the factory 1/4" rubber line and connect it directly from the primer bulb to the VRO inlet fitting. Get rid of any other connections. Use a service manual to test the pumping action and the alarm system.
