What if...I failed to winterize an outboard?

a 15 and 2 hp evinrude, each at least 15-20 years old, worked fine for the '03 season. Lack of expereince and moving and unexpected circumstances led to me forgetting to winterize either motor. What can I expect to happen as a result, and what will I be able to do to fix it?

Also, what, if anything, can I do now to lower the extent of the damage that will be done to the machines?

I would say that at a minimum the carbs should cleaned real well and rebuilt. I'm sure others with more knowledge will add to the list.

Hi Nate,
It's possible absolutely nothing will happen. If you run high quality oil with good long-term storage properties, then you may not have any internal corrosion to worry about. If the seals in the units are good and no water has entered, then you may not have any cracked housings or rusted gears. If your last run was late in the season and the gas didn't go bad, the carbs may be okay.

However, since you're in RI you may have a higher salt exposure, hence more chance to corrode unprotected parts. Basically, you won't know 'til you try them. Check the gear lub for water and it probably ought to be replaced as a matter of course. Run the motors and check for proper cooling, and operation. If they are hard starting, balky on acceleration, etc. then the carbs are likely gummed up. Good luck!
- Scott
