Default 1977 evinrude 140hp 2 stroke

I am new to this. took a boat that was given to me by my step father, to the lake. when i idle, and give it gas, it runs good for awhile, about 30mph, then it just stops like it does not have fuel. i notice when it does this the primer bulb is compressed all the way. like the pick up in the tank is clogged or something. after that happens, it takes awhile to get it going again. the tank has been cleaned out. the only thing i can think of at this time is that maybe the pickup hose is sitting on the bottom of the tank .any advice is welcome

(Fuel Anti Siphon Valve)(J. Reeves) Check the built in fuel tank where the rubber fuel line attaches to the tank fitting. That fitting is in all probability a "Anti Siphon" valve which is notorious for sticking in a semi closed position. It will be aluminum, about 2" long, and the insides of it will consist of a spring, a ball, and a ball seat. If this valve exists, remove it, knock out those inner components which will convert it to a straight through fitting, then re-install it. Hopefully that cures the problem.

After you follow The advise of Mr. Reeves consider replacing the primer bulb as well. They too can be faulty and cause flow problems.

The bulb is new, arrow pointing to the engine. on my tank, i have a quick release fitting. like i said , it will run good for a short time. and then just bog down and quit. and the primer bulb is compressed.

Then you most definately have a fuel restriction on the fuel tank side(upstream) of the bulb.Pickup tube or as Joe mentioned, the anti-syphon valve of the fuel tank fitting.
