G'day
I would like to find out what year my Evinrude Fisherman is, what the spark plug gap should be and how to change the contact breaker points. The model number is: 6402C
The serial number is: A104433
I have searched the forums but couldn't find this information. Also the spark plugs in the motor are Champion L-7J. Is there a better spark plug to use or are they all relatively similar? I would like to try to squeeze a bit more top end speed out of her!
Thank you
Marc

That's a 1974 6 HP ya got there. Recommended Spark plug is Champion J6C gapped at .030. You will need to pull the flywheel to change or adjust the points. A flywheel puller is nessesary for the job. Point gap is .020.

Points

Thanks for the info Rick. Once I remove the flywheel is the rest of the job pretty straight forward? I gap the points on my cars - I'm guessing it would be the same process. Forgive me if I sound stupid but I haven't done much work on outboards and its probably not worth buying a manual for it. Thanks for your reply.
Marc

G'Day, Marc.

Though the Fisherman is a pretty simple engine, if you plan to work on it it is worthwhile to use a Repair Manual. Even a simple mistake can cost you more than a manual.

I am not sure what usual practice is in Oz, but here our local Library usually has a manual for loan or for legally copying selected sections.

Good luck. :)

Fair point JB. I think I'll check out the library then have a crack at it.
Marc

Re: Evinrude Fisherman 6HP

Couldn't find a manual at my local library so I had a go at replacing my points, condensers and popped in a couple of new plugs at the same time. Went back together without any probs but seemed a big sluggish when I went for a test. When the points are open, how do I get the gap correct? (when the points open they are not parallel to each other but open in sort of like a wedge shape) Am I supposed to file the points to make the surfaces parallel? (kinda defeats the purpose of renewing them) Or is there a trick to it? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Marc

Gap the points .020" with the cam rider aligned with the crankshaft keyway... Wdge-shaped is fine when they're open, as long as they're parallel when closed...
- Scott
