I have a 1986 Johnson 225 That has had the VRO removed. It starves for fuel at 5000 RPM. I brought it to an authorized Johnson dealer who rebuilt all 6 carbs and replaced both fuel pumps. The motor runs great but still only to 5000 RPM. He changed all fiters tightened all connections, same problem. He hooked it directly to his own fuel tank same problem. He confirmed problem was fuel by having assistant squeeze primer ball when motor started cutting out and it ran up to 5500 RPM. He said he is at a loss as to what else to do. Any suggestions?

Hey Gone....welcome to iboats.

The dual fuel pump system was just barely enough at best. You would be better off to re-install the VRO pump and use the fuel side of it and leave the oil end capped off if you want to pre-mix fuel.

Are you sure it is starving for fuel or cutting out.The reason I ask is because a fellow I know had almost the same problem. He took it to a dealer and they did the same thing to his motor with no luck.I kept telling him that it was not fuel problem that it was spark. He finaly put on a new power pack and his troubles were over. The bad pack was dropping one cylinder now and then. Also some of the factory packs have a rev limiter that goes hay wire and will not let the engine reach the full RPM.

If you're talking about the two pump system off of a crossflow, I'm sure that won't supply enough. Besides, where did he hook the second pulse line?

Before we burn this thing up take OBJ's solid advise.

Good luck!

(Make sure youre running Champion plugs too!!)
