Matching lower units

I have a 72 Johnson 25 hp model 25R72. It needs lower unit work (from reading here sounds like clutch dog) but I've found a lower unit off a 68 25 horse. I'm wondering, will that fit on my 72? They are both long shaft.

If the clutch dog is bad take it out and turn it around. I did that on an early 70's 25HP Evinrude that was slipping out of forward gear and it has run great for 10 years. Put the bad side on the reverse side. It will still work in reverse. Just a thought. Cost me nothing to fix.

I'm going to check that before I buy the older lower unit. If the clutch dog as well as the forward gear are both shot it might be cheaper to swap lower units. Just wondering if these two years will match up.
