Has anyone ever tried these? Are they any good? Was the spark the same/better/worse?

Re: Magnatune electronic breaker points replacement?

I tried Atom electronic breakers back in the 70s or 80s. They looked identical, I'm betting they're renamed. They worked, but took a lot of cranking to get the motor started. I put them on a 1960 40Hp Johnson. It started okay with a good battery, but rewind starting was about out of the question. I had to give it everything I had to get it to spark. I put points back on. I bet I still have those out in the garage. I tried one on a chainsaw. Good spark. But then, you can yank some good RPMs on a chainsaw. But wrong timing. Kicked back like an SOB and wouldn't start. I put the points back in that, too.

Re: Magnatune electronic breaker points replacement?

I ran across those Atom ones, I think your right. Thanks! The engine I planned to use this on has both electric and manual start, and isn't that easy to pull-start (no compression relief).
I've been playing with the OMC magneto ignition system and have been quite unable (so far) to get much of a decent spark. My best attempt so far took a couple rotations to charge the trigger circuit... It seems to me this (3 pole) magneto needs to be triggered at *very* low resistance but high currents. Anyway, when I saw Magnatune I gave up. :)
I guess we both ran into the same fundamental problems...

EDIT: March/04: I'm updating this for anyone who's searching around. I found from some other sources that Magnatune doesn't work at idle speeds in old OMCs. Seems you don't want this at all in a Johnny/Rude.
