I have a 77 evinrude 70hp. There are three cylinders in all. How do you know if a cylinder is not working? If i pull the middle plug while it is idleing it will lose a power and die. Is that because that carb supplies the others with gas? Someone please help the mechanically challenged!

Re: lost cylinder?

When you pull a plug wire and the motor dies, it does so because it is firing. When you pull the wire and there is no change then that plug was not.

It may because it was the only 1 out of the 3 that was firing.

Re: lost cylinder?

start the motor with all plugs in the head, then put on a simple timing light down by the spark plug, if the timing light lights up it works. then do the next two plugs. if they all work then try new plugs, if that doesn't solve it, then do a compression test and ignition diagnostic. if this is something you are not comfortable with, then bring the motor in to be tested, it'll cost around a hundred bucks, but you'll know everything that is wrong with it!! hope that helps :D
