1995 VRO /FUEL SYSTEM ADJUSTMENTS

I HAVE A 95 JOHNSON 175 OCEAN RUNNER. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT ADJUSTMENTS CAN BE MADE TO THE FUEL SYSTEM. REPLACED THE VRO AND THE MOTOR STILL SMOKES LIKE IT IS RUNNING TOO LEAN. ANY COMMENTS WOULD HELP.

mitchz,<br /><br />Please do not use all CAPS. It basically says you are yelling.<br /><br />There are no adjustments to the oil injection system. If you truly have excess smoke, this usually means the engine is running overly rich.<br /><br />The most likely culprit(s) would be carburetors in need of a rebuild.

Two things that can make the fuel oil ratio increase are air bubbles in the fuel line or a restriction in the fuel system. Either way, less fuel reaches the "VRO" where it receives a full 'shot' of oil, making a richer mixture.<br /><br />Engine tune and carbon buildup can affect combustion. Make sure the thermostats are warming up each cylinder head to about 140 degrees, Use only Champion QL78YC plugs gapped at .030". Carb adjustments on that motor make a difference in drivability. Run a can or two of Engine Tuner thru the motor per the directions on the can.

Thanks for the suggestions DJ and Seahorse. Sorry about caps. I'll remember that for my next post. I noticed that the spark plugs were foiled althought just recently installed. I was in the process of changing them again. Are champions plugs (QL78YC)the only recommended plug for the 175 johnson Ocean runner?

Just as a followup to my last comment, for oil injected models including 1995 I am getting data that suggests that Champion plugs QL77JC4 be used instead of Champion plugs QL78YC. Any additional input would be helpful.

QL77JC4 will run cooler and I don't think you need that right now as you are loading up the plugs with the hotter ones.

You are reading old data, it was around '95 or '96 that the then OMC changed the plugs to QL78YC. In fact they made it simple, all loop scavenged outboards, 40hp and up use the QL78YC plugs. Use the official OMC (Bombardier) plug chart if your motor is not a late model.

Thanks for the update Seahorse and RB. I plan on installing the new plugs in the A.M..<br /><br />Nightstaker, The engine kicks over really easy and I usually get a lot of smoke for 12-15 minutes until the engine warms up and the choke opens. The engine than smokes while I'm under way. I have a two gallon resevoir and usually add a gallon(topoff) of TCW3 every third trip, approximately 40-50 gallons of gas. Is this a normal amount of oil consumption? This will be the second set of plugs that I will be installing in nine months. But I think a problematic VRO may have contributed to the shorten life of the plugs that I had installed the later part of last year. Thanks for the comments and help
