i have a 1980 50hp evinrude that needed a starter, and i have a blown 1969 85hp evinrude, with a good starter, just for kicks, i tried it, and it fits, and it turns over, with ease, but now i have no spark, and it started before, without starter, by rope starting it, could new starter cause some adverse effect?

Ya need to keep this all together on the same thread Mike. It makes it easier for everybody to keep up with.

c/6
Hooty

Edit: To answer the question about should the different starter make it not start, I'd say no.

New starter will have NO effect on running or starting, unless you pulled a wire loose during installation. Remove starter and look around for a bad wire, since it's the only thing you did that caused the no-start condition..
