Assembly of lower unit onto the arm

When I reassenble the lower unit onto the arm, should I put some grease on the upper end of the drive shaft? When I took it apart it was dry, no oil of grease.

I just read my manual for a 1980 50 hp last night & it said not to grease the end. could take up too much space when reinstalling and cuase binding. I new here so wait for other replies also.

You want to use moly-lube on the splines. Getting lube on top of the shaft, along with the splines can cause an air lock. This can cause downward pressure on the driveshaft reducing the end-play, and causing undo wear.
