I have a 1983 Johnson 175hp.it takes forever to start and when it does it runs for a few seconds and dies.I can lift the idle bar and it will run but not smooth, when i am able to get it in gear it will put along but if i try to power down on it it will shut off.The guy i got it from told me the carbs were rebuilt, head shaved, new head gaskets, new water jacket gaskets. The motor sat about six months. Can anyone tell me what i need to do to fix it?

Check to make sure you are getting spark to all cylinders. Sounds like you may have a couple of cylinders not firing.

Hi, Doodle.

First, get yourself a Repair Manual.

When did the engine last run properly? Was that 6 months ago?

Check for spark on all 6 cylinders. If you have good spark on all, clean and overhaul all carbs.

Set carbs, ignition timing and link 'n' synch according to the manual.

If that doesn't get her humming, come back and tell us what you have done and what the results were.

Good luck. :)
