First time forum member neededing assitance with a (95)Johnson 175hp Ocean Runner.

This topic may have been posted previously, if so please advise to URL link, if not any advise would be helpful.

Last fishing stop of the day I could not start the engine the other day.

Finally kicked over engine after squeezing primer ball prior to water separator filter.

Homeward bound trip lasted 5 minutes before engine quite at low RPM's(1400). Previous attempts would not allow me to get the engine on plane before engine quit.

Repeated this process many times to get our G/W home.

Have checked gasoline filter and no evidence of contaminates or water. Had fueled up just prior to going out the same day.

Thanks,
MZ

Re: Engine quits while running in gear

mitch - First a welcome - Now to the problem - Your description fits either an obstruction or air in the fuel supply. Check the screen filter at the end of the fuel pick-up tube in the fuel tank. Check that the tank vent is clear. Check all fittings/connections for air entering the fuel line. That should do it.

If you have a water seperator drain it and replace the filter.

If you have another portable tank you could run the motor off of that tank to eliminate bad fuel.

Along the same idea as Solittle, remove the fuel line from the connector at the engine and see if you can pump fuel easily with the fuel bulb. If you place the fuel line beneath the gas tanks it should be able to siphon the tank once its flowing (start the flow with the bulb). If you're not getting good flow follow Solittle's advice and check for obstructions leading to the tank (connectors, fuel filter, fuel tank pickup and strainer, etc.)

If you are getting good flow you might have a sick fuel pump which needs a rebuild.
