I am looking at a 7.5 hp Evinrude outboard, serial# 5522 04875. The owner does not know the year model. It starts fine but I cannot see any water coming out to indicate the water pump is working. It does not have a telltail like the Johnson and Mercury motors. Where is the water outlet for the water pump and what year model is this motor?
Thanks for any help
John

John,

That is a 1961 "5.5" HP your looking at there. The water exits at the relief holes on the back top of the leg. Outside of replacing the impeller, you will never know for sure that it's good. If you get it, replace the impeller, unless you know for sure it has been done recently.

Actually, there is only a single relief hole on that motor, about the size of your thumb tip, about mid-way up the rear of the motor leg. You should get a good healthy gush of water out of there, akin to an un-aerated faucet turned on medium.
- Scott
