recently bought a 72 johnson 100hp hydro electric shift. water pump was supposedly replaced. i had to reattach lower unit to engine. having leaking problems. Quest: is it normal on this model to have a tiny hole on port and star sides approx. 1/16" dia. on lower unit in addition to the two **** holes underneath engine pan or could these be caused by electrolosis? these holes are a-symetrical on location of unit. with muffs on and engine running all water pressure seems to be escaping through these small holes and not making it to **** holes. also i have a hole where engine connects to lower unit portion facing the boat that i dont know if it supposed to be there. when engine is running water shoots out of this hole. after shutting engine off gear oil escapes. any suggestions?

I think what you're seeing is normal. If the "gear oil" you see leaking out after you shut the engine off is nasty black caca, it's not gear oil but unburned premix, and that is normal.

c/6
Hooty

thanks for the imput hooty. its not black, it looks and smells like fresh lower unit gear lube.yellowish in color. are you sure it is normal for water and gear lube to come out of the same hole?

No, that's not normal. Sounds like a prop shaft seal is leaking. Is there water in the gear case?

c/6
Hooty

I believe the small holes you are referring to are drain holes. They protect the case from freeze breakage in cold weather. Water from these holes would be normal when running on muff's as this engine has what is called a wet sleeve. The upper housing holds a certain amount of water around the exhaust megaphone to give a silenceing effect. If you see amber colored gear oil from these holes, it would be from the upper drive shaft seal. It could come from the electric solinoid cover, but not likely.
