Default Shifting on a 76 85HP Evinrude

My Evinrude shifts into gear fine, forward or reverse, when I apply a good bit of force to the control. When I just ease it forward to creep along it sometimes sounds like a car trying to go into gear without pressing in the clutch. Is this normal or should I make some adjustments? It does go into gear, but that grinding noise doesn't sound too good. Thanks. Just rebuilt it with my father in law. Here are some pics http://www.outboarddealer.com/76evinrude.html

Hey Spider John.Looking at my ammount of posts I'm in now way an expert. But I do know one thing ! I see that You hear grinding when it's "eased" into gear. Your hearing the beveled Dog gear basicly slipping alot untill it Finally grabs your forward or reverse beveled gear. I've heard on other posts when switching from forward to neautral to reverse on these outboards you must give it a quick strong one motion push. The slower you push the more grinding you'll hear ! (the nature of the beast)I think I'm right !Joe from Ohio....

Clean looking motor ! I've got a 66 60 HP almost that clean. I could do without the 4 cylinders though......

spiderjohn,When shifting use a quick motion. DO NOT EASE IT INTO GEAR.

Spiderjohn, I own a '76 115 and it will also make a clicking or grinding sound when I engage it too slowly. A quick motion(without giving it gas)seems to work best for me. Nice pictures! Mine looks almost identical, but not quite as clean.
