Gents,

Could someone kindly advise what is the method to test the Oil Injection Pump warning horn? Also, what is the method to test the overheat horn?

I have been looking through the shop manual for this info to no avail.

I have a 1987 225HP 2.7L OMC SeaDrive.

Thank you!
Ken Ameika
Red Bank, New Jersey

Re: Testing Oil Injection Warning Horn

The hot horn and wiring test is easy, just ground out the tan wire on the motor harness side where it connects to the cylinder head temp switch. There is one on each head. Do this with the key to ON. If the horn doesn't sound, then you have a bad horn or a wiring problem.

The horn has a purple and a tan wire going to it. The purple is 12V from the key switch. The tan wire, if grounded, completes the circuit and the horn blares.

To test the VRO system you have to hook up a 6 gal. tank of 50:1 fuel to the engine and disconnect the oil line from the pump. Then you run the motor until the horn starts an on and off sound. It takes several minutes of idle before the alarm goes off due to the residual oil in the pump system, and that the motor is not burning much gas at that speed.

Will that test also work on a 1987 Johnson 50 hp that has Vro as well?

Hi Again. Many thanks for that information.

another question: If I were to push the TCW3 tank sensor plunger down, completing the circuit with the little washer to the two sister contacts, would I get the same test result?

Is this not recommended?

I do appreciate the horn test item. I will get that done before the snow begins falling.

Ken.
