got most of my problems resolved since last post.
rebuilt carbs, changed head gasgets, new plugs and wires. starts perfect. now it seems to idle real high on the hose and very low in the water. what should the idle be? also lots of air blows out of pisser until t-stats open is this normal?

olm....it's normal for an outboard to idle high out of the water. No backpressure, the effect caused by being in the water. I'm think'n idle should be 750 to 850 in the water.

I'll agree mostly with OBJ, although I would try and set it closer to 700-750.
Thats where I ran mine untill I put fiber reeds in, and now I'm at 550.....

Re: 88 johnson 120

The reeds we are talking about are two stage reeds. Common brand is Boyesen, made by a company in Penn.

The two stages allow for a more defined flow of the air/fuel mix to the cylinders. This makes idle a dream and you also get some fuel economy.

They are not difficult to install but take time because you need to resurface the reed cages dead flat. This inturn makes the cages unusable for stock reeds. Also a hard sneeze, when the engine blows back through the carb, can damage them. But the adavantages, IMO, make them worth while.

1988 120/140
idle- 575 to 700
timing- 8 degrees ATDC
max spark- 18 degrees +/- 1 BTDC
full throttle 5000 to 6000
power rated @ 5500
powerpac rpm limit 6700
-
like said above idle will be higher on hose, no back pressure.
