Re: Johnno seahorse year
The dribbling could be caused by a blockage in the "tell tale" hose from the block and/or the tell tale outlet mounted on the housing.

It would be a wise idea to replace the water pump and while you are at it, drain and change the oil in the lower unit. While changing the water pump impeller, you can do a visual check and see if any of the impeller rubber is missing.

Prior to doing the above, you can disconnect the tell tale hose from the block and start the engine. If it flows in a solid stream, you have a small blockage in the hose or outlet. If the intermittent dribble occurs, shut it off and go to the water pump.

While the lower unit is draining, check the color of the oil. If it is milky, you probably have a leaking seal, or at the least, a leaky washer on one of the lower filler/drain plugs. Make sure you replace them each time you change the L/U oil. They are very inexpensive. These plugs take a standard blade screw driver. You will see a Phillips screw head in the same area, LEAVE IT ALONE, as it is connected to the gears in the lower unit.

When you decide to change the water pump on your L/U, make sure you get a manual that covers your 1985...6HP...Johnson, if you do it yourself.(They are good to have even if you don't do your own maintenence) I'm sure if you click "manuals" at the top of this page, I'm sure you will find what you need. ...Enjoy...

...Bob in Calif...
