Hello all you experts!

I just got my first boat, she is an old lady but she was running great when i first tuck her.
She has a 1996 40hp Johnson engine with manual start.

Now she's doing a little problems with the engine, she wouldnt start and i have no spark in the plugs, I tryed checking all the wires and i changed the coil but that didnt work.
i decided to try and change the CDI(powerpack) since someone told me that 90% of the problems come from the CDI in this model.

So i was in the shop of the last person selling Johnson parts in my country(he is closing also), He had almost the same CDI (mine is 584528 and his was 584768) they look the same only in his CDI there is another wire comming out for engine temrature.
He said it will work fine with my engine and there is no problem.

My question is: Is it really the same CDI, will it not do any harm to the engine ?

I didnt try it yet, waiting for you answer.
Batz

hello
if the extra wire is brown or brown with a red stripe it is for the S.L.O.W. sensor. the two packs may have different over speed limits. I have seen this done. it will make spark if the timer and stator are good. have you tested them ?
good luck and keep posting

Thanks rodbolt

That was a very fast reply!

the extra wire is brown and I assume that S.L.O.W. is something that limits RPM when engine is to hot, right ?

so there shouldn't be any problem getting a spark and thats the important thing right ?!

I'll try it tomorrow and keep you posted.

Hi whiterabit

Before you throw your $ take rodbolts advise and do a stator test. It shouldnt be that difficult if you have a peak readin voltmeter.

I almost forgot:

Try to disconnect kill wire (yellow/black wire ) as close to pack as possible. Common causes of no spark are faulty ignition switch or neutral switch, shorting kill wire to ground.

Sorry Guys

This is all too new for me, forgive me for being slow.

The stator is the thing under the fly wheel that makes the electricity to the power-pack (spark) right ?

OK, i have looked in many post and in outboardparts.com and i did find a good, easy to understand explanation on how to test the stator.
I tried once to take the fly wheel apart and i discovered that i need a special tool or something.

I can get a voltmeter from a friend, what do i do with it ?

PS
i checked the ignition switch, its fine.

hello
wow Israel, long way from me :) .
anyway if you have acess to a standard multimeter about all you can do is resistance tests. for the stator unplug the connector at the pack that has a brown and a brown/yellow wire. test on the low ohms scale between the two wires that go to the stator. should have a low resistance. I dont have my refernces here so I am winging this. you are testing a coil of wire. should be 750- 1000ohms or so.the trigger coils are the 3 wire connector. the resistance from a-b and c-b should be about10 -20 ohms. a quick test of the stop circuit is to attach one lead to the blk/yellow wire at pin E on the ign plate 5 pin connector and the other lead to ground. with the key ON and the stop clip in place there should be no continuity. good luck and keep posting. :) :)

This was the last strew

I putted the new CDI and... **** it didn't start
I couldn't check for a spark because i was all by my self in the marina.

I think this problem is a bit over my head, i'm going to check the engine with a person that really know's what he's doing, i just don't want to make any damage, i don't have the $ to learn how to fix it my self.
(sometimes the cheapest is the most expensive)

I'll let you guy know what was wrong when i do.
thanks for you help.
