tach and prop question 1984 30hp

how can i put a tach on my 1984 30 hp johnson? the charging system does not work due to a bad stator. charging is not a problem with it because the batery needs only start the engine and run my fish finder. witch it will do fine for several days of fishing without recharging.when fishing at night i use a second batery for lighting. i want to install the tach because i feel the motor may be over proped. doesnt seem to be geting 5000 rpm at WOT. motor is on a 16' mod v aluminum jon with side console and 1/2ply floor. any ideas on the prop it should have?

Don't know about the prop, but you can install what they call a "Tiny-Tach".....has a wire that wraps around plug lead to give you RPM-neat little unit!!! Small engine shops-Briggs, Tec, Kohler should carry them.....Let us know the R's when you get it figured out.. Good luck! :)

tinytach <br /><br />Prop should be in the area of a 10" X 15", for a light aluminum boat.
