I checked out the control unit I have and it says "Johnson Command Center". I opened it up and there is a horn inside. There is also a grey tach wire with the end capped off with shrink tubing. Both ends of both cables match the pictures of the cables in the newer flat control box shown in my 1993 service manual. They also connect to the 1993 Evinrude 40hp ob I have just like the service manual shows.

I would like to know the years that this Command Center was in use, and if it will self test, features and functions, etc.

I have searched these forums as well as the net in general but have only found a few references to Command Center in posts at iboats, but nothing that addresses my issues.

Thanks,

Mark.

Hello
look at the cable ends to see if they are platic at both ends or just one end. the new style cables are plastic only on one end and the ends are crimped on permanently. the old style cables had removable plastic ends on both ends. there is some non conformances with the pre 78 and post 78 boxes and cables.
Good Luck and keep posting

They are plastic at both ends. The end inside the control unit is grey plastic and has a part number 206408. The o/b end has the black (really dark red, I think) plastic end.

They look like the cables in the '93 service manual, so I will assume that the Command Center is a post '78 unit?

I did notice that there are the words "tachometer ground" cast into the housing near a screw, if that helps. Also, the lower "front" half outside housing has the number 317912-D1 cast into it.

And there is a recessed screw (blade) on the end of the unit opposite the key end. Know what that adjustment is for? Its not the throttle friction setting.

Thanks,

Mark

hello
its a 78 and older unit. it will work but you may have to modify the cable ends. I would rather see you just buy the correct box and walk away smiling. you model has removable ends and the post 78 did not.it is just to simple to buy the corrct stuff before attempting an installation then trying to re-engineer everything
good luck and keep posting

Hi Rodbolt,

The cables may have been changed on this Command Control box before I got it. I don't see how the ends are removable. Can you explain this a little further? The ends look exactly like the ones shown in the '93 service manual on the later control box. I am confused.

I plan to disassemble the control box and test it all, but I would like to know what it is supposed to do feature wise prior to debugging the thing.

These things are not cheap. So I would like to use the one I have as long as it works properly.

Mark

What makes the buzzer in the Johnson Command center buzz? (what is it for)? and how do you get the spring ball depressed to put the cover of the center back on?
