1965 18hp evinrude

I have a 1965 18hp evinrude motor. I don't know anything about outboard engines so here is my problem if any suggestion please respond. Has great compression nad starts up good. Problem is when you put it forward or reverse nothing happens a friend had told me something about a pin or a gear dog. Where do I start?

Hi, Cadyman.<br /><br />Start by getting yourself a repair manual. http://www.boatmotors.com/manuals.html <br />It will show you how the gearshifting and gearcase work.<br /><br />After that it should be fairly easy.<br /><br />If you run into a problem, we are here.<br /><br />Good luck. :)
