Good used powerheads for those 1969-72 V4s are available pretty cheaply. (Probably because some people have trouble finding replacement hydroelectric lower units and/or CD ignitions - so they unload the remainder cheaply). <br /><br />Any of the 1969-72V4s will bolt on (85/100/115/125hp). There are two types of ignitions on these motors, but the one off your 85 will bolt onto either type block (all the cranks have both cams & pinholes, so you can use either system). <br /><br />I have two I would let go for too much money ($350) simply because I have ignitions & lower units lined up for them. I suspect you can find a good one for $100, in fact a 1969-70 115 just went by on eBay with no takers.<br /><br />Swapping powerheads is not that big a deal on an OMC V4. The only hitch would be if your motors real salt corroded, and even then it's not very hard to get the job done - just isn't fall-down easy. <br /><br />Obviously, you want to make sure the same problem doesn't re-occur - didn't the heat alarm on your control set work?<br /><br />BTW, the 115/125s are a ton stronger on the top end than the 85. They are all nearly the same displacement, just tuned differently. The 85 has a fatter midrange, will push a big boat (e.g., 19-foot cuddy) perhaps even better than the 115/125, and is less prone to burn out. But I've run a few of both on the test prop, and there's no overlooking the top end on the 115/125 - way hairier motor.
