I have a '79 evinrude 4 cyl 100 hp engine mod# 100999s, ser# j0004004 outboard with power trim. Recently after frying a 1 yr old battery, i discovered my charging system was putting out 19+ volts to the battery. The authorized repair shop replaced the stator once, and the dioide rectifier twice. Upon running the engine at idle, the out-put is 14 volts to a new battery. Upon engaging the transmission, the voltage gradually increases to 19+ volts as rpm's increase. This remains constant until the rectifier is replaced. The repair shop is baffled, and my question is , has anyother individual had this problem? If so, what caused it?

Re: high voltage out-put

This engine not equipt with a regulator. I think you can retrofit a water cooled regulator from a later model engine, parts books shows hole in top of block for regulator.

If your voltage figures are correct, you need a larger capacity battery. A group 27 deep cycle should do fine. Another way is to put 2 batteries in parallel.
