I have a Johnson 60Hp on a 17' Key West. I have had it about 3 months. Has run excellent for 2 months. However, the last month has not been good. Whenever I get up to 3/4 or full throttle, the engine stops. When I try to crank again, it acts like it is flooded. When I finally get it cranked again, it runs ragged (sputtering). Carried it to mechanic - said he did not see anything wrong except linkage on Carbs. Carried it back to waterway this weekend. Run fine all day until I was leaving. Got it up to 3/4 throttle and the problem happened again. Sounds fuel related to me. Can anyone shed any light?????

JD, sounds like the tank is not properly vented. Does the squeeze bulb go flat?As more fuel is used , greater vacuum is created in the tank. This slowly chokes off the fuel supply starting with the highspeed end of it. Open the cap part way to see if this is the problem.nevjb

I have noticed that the bulb isn't staying pumped as tight as it should. I did check the vent mechanism on the tank and it looks like it should be getting air. I will double check it. Do you think it could be the bulb?

JD , I lean more towards a restriction in the line or tank. Use a separate tank and new line connected to the motor. It will eliminate everything from the motor back by doing this. Just a process of elimination. nevjb

I just had a problem with bad fuel and carbs full of "varnish". My boat had sat for a couple of years and the carbs were really full of crud. The fuel tank had some gunk as well. Fixed one problem and the other came to the front. If your boat sat for a long time have the carbs checked for varnish. I ran two tanks of fuel thru before the problems really got bad, and sound a bit like yours. Boats in the shop now and due to get her back Tuesday. Just something to watch for.

Thanks for the advice. I will keep this in mind. I bought a new bulb yesterday. I may get to try it out later this week. I'll post the results.

I have not had a chance to take out and test. However, someone else has since told me that they think my problem is the ignition coil. Sounds like a good possibility to me except for the fact that there are 3 ignition coils and when I am going at top speed it completely shuts down. I could understand it slowing down and sputtering, popping...but not completely cutting off when there are two other coils. I know all three aren't going bad at the same time.
Can anyone help....still puzzled.

JD
