Is it possible to boost the HP on my 1998 Oceanrunner 150 to 200 or 225 instead of looking for a new motor?

The 150 runs great but the cost of a new motor to increase the performance to where I would like it just doesn't make sense.

Thanks.

Nope. The 200 and 225 are on a different block (3.0l).

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB.

It's a 22' Hydra-Sport, top speed 38 on the GPS at 5000 RPM. I cruise at 30 at 4250 RPM.

This is a deep-v hull and I want to be able to hold my trim angle better when running in rougher seas.

The cost of upgrading to a new 225 with a stainless prop just doesn't make financial sense. I'm better off buying a new boat - I think.

Thanks,

J

At a top rpm of 5000 you arent getting the full potiental out of the motor at any throttle setting. The motor is lugging and probably will not last as long as it should.

Try playing with the set up and propellers to get as close to 5800 as you can. Even 6000 wouldn't hurt.

Good luck!

If your current prop is a OMC aluminum 19" pitch 3 blade, I would recommend the Turbo 4, 4 blade stainless 17" pitch.
You will lose a couple of mph on the top end, but you will have a incredible hole shot, and will keep your boat on a plane in rough seas at low throttle settings.
I would think you will turn about 5300-5400 rpm.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=034865

As a follow-up to AUGIDAWG, I would go to the turbo 17" 3-blade and keep your top-end, and get that much closer to 5800R's.....just another opinion... :)
BTW, the stilletto is the exact same prop-different sticker...you may have easy access to that prop as well.

That is a good suggestion. It will increase your rpm up to a better spot than the 4 blade.
I really like running my 200 at 6000 rpm at WOT.
When I back it down to 5500, I am at a efficient throttle setting (gas mileage), and engine just purrs.
Try to get your WOT rpm at the top of the range.
You will be happy.

I think you could get a 15" pitch 4 blade, but you will definately lose top end speed, but your rough seas performance would be top notch.

Prop selection is a big compromise, but my suggestion is to "rev it up"!

uhhh. i've asked this in so many posts, i can't keep track. if his manual recommends 5000-5500 rpms, why do people tell him to run at 6000?

yet the first thing i was told when i joined this forum was to buy a manual...

Re: Boost 150HP to 200 - 225?

We target 5800 (average load) so that with a heavy load the rpms wont fall very much and the holeshot is still decent (the motor doesnt strain getting on plane). Several other things come into play too. The combustion temps at 5000 (top capeable rpm) are high enough that coking (carbon) builds very quickly. The closer to 6000 (loaded rpm) the motor is, the combustion temps come down. After many years of looking at motors with and without broken rings, and testing, the common factor is rpm.

FYI -- years ago when Stilettos was produced exclusively for Aqua Power, they were fairly close to Turbos. However, todays Turbo's have more technology that the Stilettos. There are two distinct markets and each one addresses its market very well.
