I have a 1982? 35hp Johnson. Model#J35RLCND Ser.#E5651206. Motor ran last year, and sat all winter and summer. Trying to get it running again for hunting season, but it has no spark. People have told me that it is unlikely that both coils would go at the same time. I am wondering if it could be the power pack. Is there any way to check the power pack?

You should first check the stop switch.
Sometimes it is short-circuited.
Separate it from the wires.
With an oscilloscope it would be easy for you to check the input and output signals at the corresponding powerpack terminals.
If no input signal the stator coil or the connection wire would be wrong, with no revolution proportional pulse ("dead" output)the powerpack itself would be mistaken.
Theoretically You could take an rms-voltmeter as well, but for an exact analysis You'd have to know the value of voltage measured at a working powerpack.

Nordy

Thank you Nordy. But how do i do away with the stop switch. It seems like it is hooked into the power pack.?

hello
is this a tiller or remote control? does it have an emergency stop clip and if so is it plugged in?
the stator can be tested for opens with a standard multi-meter.so can the trigger coils. for an out put test you will need a peak reading type voltmeter. or a digital with a DVA adaptor. stevens instruments sells a nice peak reading meter. what method did you use to determine a no spark condition ?
post back with more information

Rodbolt, this is a tiller motor. It does not have a stop clip, but it does have a stop button. Determined the no spark condition, with an in-line spark tester. The motor will crank like crazy, but produces no spark. I recently put a new key switch on the motor so i am going to go back and check that the key is wired correctly. I have a digital voltmeter, but that is it.

Problem fixed. Thanx for everyones help. Turned out to be a wire hooked wrong on the Key. I was actually shorting it at the key. All fixed and motor runs great. Stupid me! Oh well. Thank you, this site is very helpful.
