Choke question about early Johnson 115

I've got a mid 70's motor, and when I try to start it, with the electric choke solinoid, the choke plates fluctuate when the starter is engauged, meaning that they don't totally stay closed while cranking the motor over. There is a spring attatched to the choke solinoid, allowing for the chokes to open up a bit while cranking the motor over. Is this normal, or do I have to hard-wire the choke seloinoid to the choke linkage to keep the choke flaps totally closed? Thanks, PDS.

Try to first move the choke solenoid a tiny bit further from the pluger. More travel, might pull tighter. <br /><br />TMD

If memory services me correctly, that should already be a wire linkage, not a spring.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

Thanks, guys for your replies. It is a spring from the solinoid to the choke. Maybe if I fabricate something from the solinoid to the choke, thus eliminating the spring it would keep the choke plates closed, thus making it easier for the engines vaccume to suck the fuel out of the fuel bowl. Only a guess on my part. PDS.

Hooty, thanks for your fast reply! Any chance that your motor has an aftermarket piece on it to eliminate the spring between the solinoid and the choke? PDS.

Just went out and looked at my 74 Evin 115 and there is a spring from the solinoid to the choke.<br /><br />Mine seems to start easier with the manual choke.

Thanks for the reply, easy are you anywhere close to Camp Lejuene? Spent some time there in the mid 80's. Being from Wi, those spiders that we encontered in the woods were the biggest spiders i've ever seen. they would make a nest between two trees that were 6 ft. apart and wait for a small bird to fly into thier web. lunch is served. Worn out USMC PDS.
