1973 6HP Evinrude Broken Pinion Gear

I transported the motor from NY to FL to find out when I got to FL that the Pinion Gear broke in 1/2. Right where the Roll pin slot is. Therefore I have nothing engaging the flywheel to start the motor. The Starter rope, when pulled, coils back perfectly.

Does anyone know if this is a hard part to replace for a non mechanically inclined person? Or should I just pay a shop to repair the part. -I cant Imagine this job costing too much.

Cacioa.... The term "Pinion" pertains to the gear in the lower unit which is attached to the driveshaft.

The gear that you are speaking of is a "Manual Starter Bendix Gear", or simply "Bendix Gear". The OMC part number for that gear is 318447 and cost approximately between $10 to $15.

It's not difficult to remove and install but the manual starter must be unwound before removing the retaining pin, otherwise the spring will unwind violently when the pin is removed. Good luck.
