3HP Johnson Model JWF-22C
Serial # C543411
Is This Water Cooled or Air Cooled
Just Purchased: It starts but only for a few seconds and dies out: It has a lean and rich selector knob but no stopper so I do not know where the setting is at. I put in new plugs and a new gas line hose and checked the float bowl. The bow was spotless: Any suggestions. Thank you !!

1967 JH-JHL-22
JHF-21
JHF-22
JW-JWL-22
JWF-21

The only other model number i found with jwf was a jwf 23 made in 1968
it is water cooled an if indeed a 67 or 68 the mix would be 50:1 and plugs would be J6C gap at 30
put the mix knob about half way and pull out choke and start release ck and let warm up and then adjust knob as needed to smooth out idle.
not necessarily the slowest idle but smoothest
hope this helps

Re: What Year & Help please

Thanx Bubbakat for the quick reply. The problem I am having is that when it starts, it only runs for about 3 seconds, I put the choke in and it does not help. On the mixing knob the knob just keeps going around. I do not know if it is open or closed as there is no stopper to stop the dial from going all the way around which it is doing now. The guy I bought if from said it has been about 16 months since it was last started. I emptied all the old gas and replaced it at a 50 to 1 ratio. What do you think? Any other ideas on what the problem may be.

Re: What Year & Help please

Fat-Boy,
A motor that starts and then quickly dies usually points to a fuel delivery problem. This can be a low speed idle knob out of adjustment, dirty carb (low speed idle circuit), mis-adjusted float level, bad fuel pump.

Remove the cover and see if the idle adj. needle shaft is turning when you turn the knob. Sometimes the knob will spin , but the shaft of the needle does not. If the shaft does turn, turn clockwise until it lightly seats (closed), then turn open (counter-clockwise) 1 1/2 turns. Adjust per destructions below. :D

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

If the above adjustments does not allow the motor to continue to run, it's time to take a closer look at the carb ( through cleaning etc).
