Hey everyone,

First and hopefully last post. Can't figure this one out. 75 Evin 115hp low hours. While idleing after about 10-15 seconds the motor COUGHS. Then back to idleing 10-15 seconds then COUGH. Motor recovers after the cough and idles fine till next cough. Carbs have recently been rebuilt and a new power pack. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Safety & blue skies,

Jeff

Sounds like a lean pop..check the fuel lines for leaks...Also...hit the choke..see if the pop goes away.

Might have to do the carbs again...or get it more fuel on the bottom end.

TMD

TMD is correct. Cough means-lean mixture.

Make sure your carbs are clean. Go through your sync & link as outlined in the service manual. If all is well there you may have to richen up the idle circuit on the carbs. Its not really that unusual on those older motors. They are calibrated for the available fuel from the date on manufacture. We dont have 1975 fuel anymore.

Its of concern that you say "low hours". That leads us to believe the motor may have been sitting and a simple carb cleaning will get you going. Use OE carb kits, fresh 87 octane and Champion plugs.

Good luck!

If the thermostat is not warming up the motor enough, you will also have a lean idle "spitting" condition. Put your hands on each cylinderhead after it has idled for a few minutes, if you can keep your fingers on the head for more than 3 seconds, the motor is not warming up. It should run at around 140 degrees, plus or minus 15.
