Johnson155C on 17' STINGRAY need info on motor

I had this boat given to me with no info. The motor has a partial sn# J6132684,model# J155 and the number on plug is 396246 RPH. <br /><br />I had it out for 1st time today---sucked down 7 gal in 45 min prop loses bite at 3/4 throtle aprox 50mph and overrevs<br />Thinking of going from 15 X 17 to 14 X 21 prop. <br /> :confused: Any info on motor, ie. year, good or bad, and prop change would be great.<br /><br />I am also Planing on instaling a stingray fin on lower unit.<br /> Thanks :cool: <br /><br />P.S. This thing hauls a-s. ;)

Fuel...sounds about right.<br /><br />3/4 throttle = what RPM?<br /><br />As for the prop issue. Your hub may be slipping causing the engine to over rev.<br /><br />The boat may only be capable of 50ish mph. Once at this speed the boat might be to high out to the water and causing air to get into the prop...ventilation.<br /><br />"If" this is the case you will not benefit from a larger pitch prop as it will still happen at the 50mph range.<br /><br />TMD

TMD<br />The tac was not working so I don,t know rpm. <br /><br />Any advice on keeping air out of prop ??<br /> <br />Stingray17

that RPH is a J/E replacement powerhead. at some point in time a dealer replaced the original powerhead.<br />dont use that # for anything, its just a part#.<br />i found that out when i got a spare block, it had the same # as the motor i just bought & that # was used as serial# on a title.<br />i verified this with J&E/BOMB.
