1979 70hp 3cyl Evinrude lower unit

My brother and I are trying to replace the bearings and seals on the lower unit ofour '79 Evinrude 70hp 3cyl. We have managed to get the bearing housing, and the two retainer rings off. We have disengaged the shifter rod from the oil pump. Our repair manual shows a picture of a cylinder connected to the shifter rod but ours didn't have one. According to this manual, the next step is to remove the propeller shaft. We cannot figure out what is holding it in. Also, how do I know if the lower unit is a hydromechanical? Thanks.

You have to remove the lower unit completely off, so you can get to the pinion nut...

The lower unit HAS been removed. Right now, it's in my living room. The pinion nut has been loosened but will not come out because the clutch dog is in the way. The manual says that I should remove the popeller shaft but I cannot figure out what I missed that is keeping it in. Thanks.

Take a long shaft and push the clutch towards the forward gear "into frwd". This will enable you to get the pinion gear out. Provided the driveshaft is out.<br /><br />Once the pinion is out..make sure you push the shifter back down "into rev". Otherwise it will catch as you pull it out.<br /><br />TMD

Thanks TMD! Only one other problem. It is the prop shaft that I can't take out.

Did you remove the Shift Rod, If you removed the shift rod and pinion and the Driveshaft the Propeller shaft will come out with the forward gear, and bearing housing will come out with the shaft as an assembly.
